Comments From the Dean:

January 4-H Training

Though students were still on break, last week was a busy week on East Campus. Nearly 90 4-H faculty and staff attended the annual January training. This three-day event focused on the four areas of the 4-H Strategic Plan: Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET), Healthy Lifestyles, Career Development, and Life Skill Development. The goal is to strengthen all 4-H programming related to the outcomes identified in each of these areas. Special thanks to Doug Swanson and his professional development team along with the 4-H Action Team Leaders and all of the staff who provided educational sessions. It is exciting to see the continued focus on key issues that are critical to young people.

Family, Youth, and Community Partners

The Family, Youth, and Community Partners welcomed five new members into their organization during their annual business meeting last week. During their meeting, the group shared contacts they have been making with decision makers. They also were updated about new programs in the Textiles, Clothing, and Design Department, and were updated on the good news of Extension and the College of Education and Human Sciences. In addition, Ron Withem, Assistant Vice President of University Relations for the NU system, discussed key issues that would be facing this year’s legislative session. The goal of this group is to advocate for family, youth, and community programs of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The Partners currently have 35 members representing 24 different legislative districts. The Partners next meeting will be the Legislative Luncheon they are hosting in March. We appreciate all of the contacts they make with decision makers on our behalf.

Input on Keeping Up

Extension administration has been discussing the concept of changing Keeping Up from a weekly schedule to a biweekly schedule. Part of the reason is the variety and use of various email list serves to communicate pertinent information on a timely basis - even more timely than the once-a-week schedule. I have visited with the extension advisory committee and they are supportive of the change. Before making the change, I would like to hear what the rest of you are thinking. If you have strong feelings one way or the other please drop me an email by close of business on Jan 21. If you are OK with the change, I will interpret silence as an endorsement. Thanks for considering this idea.

Congratulations

IANR photographer Brett Hampton received the Vice Chancellor's Award for Invaluable Service from the UNL Office of Research and Graduate Studies for his photography work in support of UNL research. Brett was cited for his excellent photography skills that help depict and communicate research as well as his cooperative spirit. Congratulations, Brett.

Nebraska Wheat Board Call for Proposals

Royce Schaneman, Executive Director, Nebraska Wheat Board, has announced a request for proposals for funding for the 2008-2009 fiscal year. Commodity board proposals may be for research, research and extension, or extension projects. The deadline for proposals to ARD or Extension is February 8, 2008.

UNL has a guideline for proposals to all commodity boards. If you need a copy of this guideline, drop a note to Rick Koelsch <rkoelsch1@unl.edu> . An electronic routing form must be submitted for each proposal on the NUgrant system. One paper copy of each proposal must be submitted to the Agricultural Research Division (research proposals) or the UNL Extension Division (extension proposals). The ARD office will compile all proposals and make booklets for the Wheat Board Members.

Integrated Pest Management Competitive Grants Program

USDA announced the Integrated Pest Management: Crops at Risk and Risk Avoidance and Mitigation Competitive Grants Program with a deadline for proposal of February 29, 2008. Complete information can be found at http://www.csrees.usda.gov/funding/rfas/ipm_integrated.html. The programs seek to solve critical agricultural issues, priorities, or problems through the integration of research, education, and extension activities. They are designed to fund the development of new IPM approaches or the improvement of existing IPM systems. Applications are being solicited for the IPM Section 406 Crops at Risk (CAR) and Risk Avoidance and Mitigation (RAMP) Competitive Grants Programs. The call for proposal emphasizes (1) the evolving science and technology; (2) information identifying IPM practices (e.g., crop profiles and strategic plans); (3) risk mitigation needs; (4) the pest management needs of producers; and (5) relevance to the National IPM Roadmap (http://www.ipmcenters.org/IPMRoadMap.pdf). This is an integrated program that should target enhancing grower knowledge and adoption of appropriate IPM practices through extension outreach and demonstrations relevant to “real-world” systems.

Workshop on USDA Conservation Innovation Grant Program

USDA NRCS recently announced a call for proposals for the CIG program. The purpose of CIG is to stimulate the development and adoption of innovative conservation approaches and technologies targeting agricultural production. CIG projects are expected to lead to the transfer of conservation technologies, management systems, and innovative approaches (such as market-based systems) into NRCS technical manuals, guides, and references, or to the private sector. For additional information on the CIG program, go to http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/cig/index.html.

We have set up a presentation by Nebraska NRCS coordinator for the CIG program, Jennifer Nelson, to share more about the CIG program. Jennifer will provide an introduction to this funding opportunity and answer questions about the proposal process. This meeting is planned for Thursday, January 17, at 10 a.m. Central time. You can connect as follows:

2008 Master Conservationist Program Announced

Copies of the brochure on the 2008 Master Conservationist recognition program have been distributed to all extension offices, regional centers and departments. The brochure also is available in electronic form at this http://www.ianr.unl.edu/ianr/mc-brochure.pdf site. Copies of news materials for local announcements–news release, radio script and a newsletter/column or electronic mail item--have been sent via e-mail to each Extension office. Entries are needed in all categories, particularly youth individual and group, residence/acreage and production agriculture in District B. Nominations now can be made online by visiting owh.com and clicking on the “In the Community” link. The deadline for entries is April 1, 2008. The Master Conservationist program has been sponsored since 1983 by the UNL Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Omaha World-Herald. Members of IANR, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Natural Resources Districts and the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts judge the entries. The program provides an opportunity to recognize Nebraskans of all ages in urban and rural areas who have excelled in the use of new and traditionally acknowledged methods of soil and water conservation.

Make Every Drop Count In The Home

This program for community organizations will help renters and owners understand how water is used inside the home, why efficient use is needed and ways to use water more efficiently by changing water use practices and selecting efficient appliances and equipment. This program is especially important to those communities or individuals experiencing periodic water problems.

Resources for your use in program delivery include: Make Every Drop Count In The Home publication, facilitator's guide, power point, and evaluation assessment available at: http://communityprograms.unl.edu/programs.html.

A recent study in Lincoln, NE, shows that a household of four uses on average 300 to 400 gallons of water each day. Current averages for household use are about 100 gal./person/day, according to EPA. A recent U.S. Government survey of water managers indicated that 36 states anticipate local, regional or statewide water shortages by 2013. Seventeen public water supplies in Nebraska restricted water use in 2007 in response to either water level decline, pressure on aging infrastructure, or resource conservation; as many as 59 public water supplies have imposed water use restrictions in previous years. Some individuals relying on private wells have experienced similar problems.

Women In Agriculture Conference and Youth Scholarship Opportunities

The 23rd Women in Agriculture Conference: The Heart of the Farm will be held Thursday and Friday, February 21-22, 2008 at the Kearney Holiday Inn. Registration brochures are being sent to each of the Extension offices across the state and I am requesting your assistance in getting the word out to the farm/ranch women in your area.

For the second time, the UNL College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources is investing in our youth by paying half of the registration fees for 4-H, FFA, and Community College students. This year’s registration fee is $90, however, with CASNR’s support, we are offering a discounted registration fee of $45 to high school and community college ag students who are interested and are recommended by their instructors or extension staff. Dean Steve Waller and CASNR has generously offered to provide this support to the first 20 students who register for the conference. In addition, 5 current CASNR students will receive a full scholarship to the conference. A scholarship application form can be found at wia.unl.edu. Scholarship applications are due February 8th.

If you have a weekly column in your local newspapers, please mention this educational program, the dates, student scholarship and the 800 phone number. If you need additional copies of the brochure, please contact me or you can print them from wia.unl.edu. Brochures are also being sent to past participants of Women in Ag, to commercial banks and to the media.

Thank you for your continued support of Nebraska WIA! If you have any questions, please contact me at mvoss2@unl.edu, 402.472.0079 or 800.535.3456.
